I photographed this almost exactly a year ago in a small cemetery in Lacey's Spring, Alabama:

I generally visit a couple of times each year and I'm always struck by just how many grave sites there are for babies and young children. Most of them date from early in the 20th century, but this one seems to be much more recent and obviously the family must be of very modest means! Scenes like this always sadden me!

I've driven by this old country store in Lacey's Spring, Alabama several times over the years and I've always wanted to take a photograph of it, but I just never had the opportunity until recently when I drove down specifically to check out the old store. Oddly, I had never noticed the flag painted on the side of the building, so, after asking permission, I shot 5 frames for a HDR composite.

I'm fairly happy with this rendition, but I'm planning to go back down when there is a better sky. This was a dreary, overcast January day which was not terribly inspiring.

I didn't realize that it had been so long since I posted here, but we're gradually recovering from Christmas and the New Year. I picked up a few goodies over the holidays. From Best Buy I bought myself a little Panasonic FH24 point and shoot camera for those times I don't want to carry around one of the big cameras. The Panasonic is a 16 megapixel camera with an 8x optical zoom and Best Buy had it on sale for $129. I'd been looking for a point and shoot for quite a while and thought this would fit the bill nicely. A couple of weeks after I got it the price was dropped to $99, but I didn't feel bad about paying more for it than that. I thought that it was a true bargain at $129 and I checked yesterday and it's back up to $179.

I also picked up a Kindle Fire for myself. I have resisted buying an e-book reader for a long time simply because I felt that I would sorely miss holding a book in my hand and turning the pages. Well, guess what? I don't miss the physical books at all and I absolutely love the Kindle! I'm still feeling my way around it, but, for the price, I don't see how it can be beat.

Hoping everyone had a very Merry Christmas and I hoping for a very Happy New Year for everyone! I'll be dropping off a roll of Holga film tomorrow so maybe I'll have some new photographs to post soon.

I did a road trip up to Fort Payne, Alabama searching for scenes to photograph and came across several that were of interest.

This is another HDR photo utilizing 7 different exposures. The photograph was processed in Photomatix which is my program of choice for tone mapping HDR images. I've used the Photoshop HDR processor, but I've never been satisfied with the results.

Toilet Paper In The Tree ::

Although this is not a HDR image I have been shooting more of them lately as well as using my tripods and monopod more. At times I will shoot 3 to 5 HDR shots hand held outside on a sunny day, but I've decided that this is not the optimum way to approach the situation and I've really come to appreciate the monopod.

So, what I wanted to say about this image is that I drove by the scene the day before I took this photograph and decided it was worthy of a HDR try, but, unfortunately, the day was pretty windy as well as sunny and when I processed the photographs there was far too much ghosting in the toilet paper on the tree. I should also add that there was much more toilet paper on the tree when I tried the HDR photograph! I was in the same area the next day which was overcast I decided to just make a normal exposure. I think it turned out ok. At least the quarter horse farm sign is not in heavy shadow!

HDR photographs taken on 09/11/11. I've begun to experiment more with HDR photography and I've decided that the use of a tripod, which I extremely dislike, will be mandatory although these photographs were taken with the use of a monopod. These were a bracket of 3 images, each 1 stop apart. I've since decided to try 5 shots at .7 stop apart. Hopefully I'll have the opportunity to try this spread out this weekend.

I've had pretty good success with a 3 shot spread, hand-held, but the tripod should yield more consistent results.

Snatching Victory From Defeat ::

I shot this several years ago when I had my Nikon D50. I ran across this scene and shot it with the 18-55mm lens with a polarizing filter as well as a lens hood so I got some pretty significant vignetting. For some reason I saved the image to the computer without really giving it much thought although I did look at it once in a while. This morning I was looking for something different to post and decided to play around with this in OnOne Software's PhotoTools. Here is the final result:

Earlier this evening I added another 4 gigs of ram to my computer so I've been doing a bit of speed testing so I worked a bit on this Holga image. The original negative was scanned to a 16 bit digital file of around 220 megs and then converted to black and white in Photoshop. I'm pretty happy with the speed gain from the extra ram.

I've had my eye on this old barn with the Huntsville Airport sign on the side for quite some time, but only today did I have a chance to take the photograph. Actually, I've had several chances before, but there always seemed to be something that was not quite right. Normally I try my best not to wait over a period of days, or months, to take a photograph, but this scene is near where I live and I wasn't really worried about it disappearing.

There are also two interesting little cemeteries on this country side road.

Taken just a few days ago.

The flowers are there as a small memorial to a lady who drove off the road late one night, clipped the side of the tree, and her car went into the lake. No one saw the accident happen, but the next day someone driving by happened to see the antenna sticking up out of the water, but it obviously was too late.

Here is my latest HDR attempt. I think that my expectations were too great on my first HDR tries and I made several mistakes, the first being that I expected to reproduce a far too great contrast range, and I produced too many bracketed shots. I had been shooting as many as 9 stops, but lately I have consciously limited myself to 3 and that seems to work much better.

Now, if I can just discipline myself to use a tripod! I've been experimenting hand-held lately and I can definitely see limitations with that approach.

Until a couple of years ago this building housed a pawn shop until it was robbed one afternoon and the lady who owned and ran the shop decided that the risk of further robberies just wasn't worth the reward so she immediately shut down. I can't say that I blame her!

This is on a little side road near where I live. There is little of interest other than this pasture with the flag wedged in the tree. The first time I photographed it was about 3 years ago on a foggy morning and there were cows in the background and one of them was looking straight at me. Actually, crosses are big in this little area and, off the top of my head, I can think of at least 4 more that I have photographed within just a couple of miles. The Clouds Cove community is a short drive away from where I live and it's down this back road that I would probably never have ventured down if not for a sign beside the main road that led me to check it out several months ago. This is one of those areas where I seem to always find something new to photograph every time I visit.

I'm looking forward to spending a lot of time in the area during the summer. As a bonus, the Flint River also runs beside the road for a ways and I'm going to try fishing there some also.

I've been working more and more with OnOne Software's Phototools 2.6 and here is one of my latest products. It's a bit more manipulation than I would normally do, but I like it. The software is very nice for working with portraits and wedding photographs and next I'll post some before and after shots with some skin tones in a few days.

I've been trying out OnOne Software's Plug-In Suite 5 and the more I use it the more I like it. The suite includes Focal Point, Mask Pro, PhotoTune, Genuine Fractals (now called Perfect Resize) PhotoTools, and PhotoFrame. I've found FotoTools to be indispensable for enhancing images and I've long used Genuine Fractals for upsizing my photographs. I believe that they do offer a trial download at their website and they also have some really great videos which run round around 1 hour each to help you get used to the products and how they can enhance your workflow.

Signs have been interesting me for a long time and I often photograph them with the little plastic fisheye lomo. Here's an example:

The owner of the acreage next to me is a beekeeper who also has begun something of an orchard in the back portion of his land. Several years will be required before the fruit trees produce, bu when I need local honey for medicinal purposes it's impossible to get more local that what I get from Hal!

This was photographed back in January just after a significant snowfall here in north Alabama. This church began life as a wedding chapel which apparently couldn't attract enough weddings to survive!

This old race car was found in front of a boat repair shop that is slowly being cleaned up with the removal of dozens, at least, of old boats. I haven't stopped by lately, but I really should do an overall photograph of the lot.

I picked up the book "Just Kids" by Patti Smith a couple of weeks ago because I was interested in her recollections of her relationship with the photographer, Robert Mapplethorpe and I found the book to be very interesting, especially the early years when Smith left home and moved to New York. The story of her meeting up with Mapplethorpe and moving in with him as they both pursued their artistic careers was fascinating in the poverty level they endured as well as the intensity with which they grew as artists.

The tales of their early years in New York made me envious of the artistic community that they were surrounded with and left me wondering what it's like up there now. I have long been a Mapplethorpe fan and had the good fortune to see an exhibit of his work at The Nexus Cooperative in Atlanta. It's too bad that so much of his work is deemed unsuitable for large public gallery spaces.

This photograph was taken on December 14, 2007 on the side of one of the local roads which goes over what passes for a mountain in north Alabama. For a couple of years after the road opened people would decorate many of the trees and bushes beside the road for Christmas then, as too often happens, the city decided that this constituted littering and threatened to fine anyone caught putting up the decorations. For the past couple of years a few people would take the chance and decorate some, but this year I only saw a couple of trees that had been decorated. I really enjoyed seeing the festive trees as I drove over the mountain!

This is one of the patriotically decorated trees which I had to hike up the side of the mountain for a bit in order to get the photo.

Yesterday morning I came across an interesting scene, shot a couple of exposures, and drove off. I grabbed the camera yesterday evening to download the photographs and, lo and behold, there was no CF card in the camera. I had had it out downloading over the weekend and had forgotten to put the card back in. I'll go back to the scene hoping that it has not changed after today's rain ends, but you can bet that I've learned a valuable lesson here. From now on I'll be sure that I replace the card after downloading. The really sad thing is that I had 3 other CF cards with me that I could have used if I'd only realized that I didn't have one in the camera.

Actually the cotton picking is winding down now and started a bit later than normal. I called one of the local cotton gins a couple of days ago and made arrangements to pick up composted cotton seeds for fertilizing my garden. $15 for a pickup truck load! You can't beat that!

As an afterthought I guess a technical detail is in order. This image is from the little plastic Holga camera. The more I use this the more I like the simple little camera!

Upsizing My Printing Capabilities ::

I'm picking up a lightly used Epson 4000 printer from a friend tomorrow. This will give me the capability to print on 17x22 paper as opposed to my maximum size of 13x19 right now. The price this unit was offered to me at is just too good to pass up!

Annie Leibovitz Exhibit In Montgomery ::

The Montgomery Museum of Art will be opening an exhibit of Annie Leibovitz photographs beginning October 28, 2010 and running through January 9, 2011. Here's a short blurb from the museum's web site:

Annie Leibovitz: WOMEN features more than 80 photographs by the renowned American photographer Annie Leibovitz. Included in this exhibition of Leibovitz’s stunning black and white and color photos are highlights from her 1999 book Women, featuring portraits of notable figures such as Barbara Bush and Oprah Winfrey, Southern heroines Eudora Welty and Osceola McCarthy, as well as formerly anonymous women who take on rolls as farmers, miners, astronauts, and soldiers.

Old Downtown Gurley, Alabama ::

There is no downtown commerce in this old but little town since the 4 lane road went in just a few hundred yards away, but someone cares enough to put a flag on the pole. Actually Gurley was a thriving community based on farming early in the 20th century and it has a rich civil war history. I often visit a local cemetery for the interesting images I always seem to find there.

Working With HDR ::

Here's my first working image from my HDR experimentation:

I ran this through Photoshop CS5 the first time, but I was terribly disappointed with the results so just a short time ago I processed it in Photomatix and I'm much, much happier with these results although I'm going to have to change my shooting technique. This image was processed from 3 separate hand held photographs and I'm really surprised at just how sharp it is, but from now on I'm going to use my tripod for HDR photographs.

I had my doubts about whether or not I would like HDR photography, but I will at least be experiment more with the technique.

It's interesting to me where I find scenes to photograph. There are some places where I could spend hours and then there are others that should be fruitful, but are nothing more than boring. About a month ago I drove down this side road near where I live that essentially dead-ends several miles in. There are a couple of side roads that shoot off from it which I have just begun exploring, but I've found several interesting, to me at least, scenes to photograph. I spent some time today dangling my toes in some HDR photography. I'm generally not a fan of HDR, but I thought I'd give it a try. I'll post my thoughts on these new images later after I've had a chance to do something with them, or not!

I may try to get back over there this afternoon for some more photography around this area. There is a nearby cemetery which I have yet to explore.

A Closed X-Rated Video Store ::

Years ago this was a convenience store that sold bait and tackle down by the Tennessee River. When it was sold the new owners opened a x-rated video store, but it closed shop just a few months ago. Come to think of it I don't know where anyone would rent any porn around here any more.

I'm still trying to figure out just what of facility the sign refers to. It could possibly have something to do with the Paint Rock River.

I found myself in this great old cemetery in Gurley, Alabama a couple of years ago and found several scenes worthy of photographing including this one. I especially like the painted fingernails complimenting the plastic flowers in the hand.

Photographed this past Sunday morning in Camden, S.C. This is a thrift store which obviously needs more inside storage for chairs!

I also wonder about the lighted christmas lights hanging over the chairs.
